The Issaquah Philharmonic Orchestra is seeking candidates for the position of Assistant Conductor who have passion and familiarity with orchestral literature and can commit to some Monday night rehearsals.  Ideal candidates might be retired conductors, school conductors, or graduate students looking for an internship.

Role and Responsibilities

The Assistant Conductor will take charge of rehearsal or concert in the absence of the Conductor.  Specifically, he or she shall be responsible for:

Studying and practicing scores for each performance ahead of rehearsal

  • Conduct at least one piece on each concert if desired with appropriate rehearsal time
  • Making efficient use of time during rehearsal
  • Assist the Conductor with sectionals when needed
  • A willingness to meet with Dr. Duane Bowen, former conducting professor, for coaching outside of rehearsal time, as needed.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Experience conducting instrumental ensembles
  • Clear conducting beat and solid technique
  • Ability to conduct musically or a willingness to learn
  • Basic knowledge of instruments
  • Ability to follow scores for full orchestra
  • Good rapport and sense of humor with musicians
  • Patience with a variety of skill levels
  • Music education background preferred

Time Commitment

  • Availability for up to three concert cycles per year
  • Available for rehearsals and performances on Monday evenings from September through mid-June.
  • This position is a one-year commitment and may be renewed at the discretion of the IPO Board of Directors

Compensation  

This is a volunteer position. Compensation comes in the form of musical growth, private instruction by an experienced conducting professor, joy that comes from being a part of a friendly group of musicians who love to make music together!
